Financial and Logistical Preparedness
The Secretary of State for Energy Transition confirmed that the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy, in coordination with the Ministry of Finance, is financially and logistically prepared to face the surge in international oil prices amid current geopolitical tensions and the conflict with Iran.
During a hearing before the Finance Committee, he explained that Tunisia has secured the bulk of its crude‑oil contracts with Azerbaijan and its liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplies with Algeria, supplemented by limited imports from European suppliers.
Budgetary Stakes and Energy Deficit
- 2026 Finance Law Assumption: Barrel price set at US $63.3.
- Cost Impact: Every $1 increase on the world market translates to roughly TND 164 million in additional state‑budget expenditure.
The Secretary also addressed the root causes of the national energy deficit, now standing at 65 %. The shortfall is attributed to:
- Scarcity of new field discoveries
- Lack of interest from major oil companies in investing in Tunisia
He reassured stakeholders that production and export data remain fully transparent and are publicly available on the Ministry’s official website.
Regional Interconnections and Grid Stability
-
Current Cross‑border Links:
- Five interconnection lines with Algeria
- Two lines with Libya
-
Future Plans: Ongoing feasibility studies aim to strengthen these connections, positioning Tunisia as a regional energy hub.
Regarding periodic power outages during peak consumption periods, Secretary Wael Chouchane clarified that these are preventive measures designed to protect the electrical system. He highlighted that the upcoming interconnection project with Italy will help minimize future interruptions.
