Tunisia Faces Alarming Rise in Kidney Disease: Free Blood Pressure Screening Campaign Launched

A Grim Reality: Over 12,000 Tunisians Now Undergoing Hemodialysis

The latest statistics paint a bleak and worrying picture: nearly 12,000 Tunisians are now undergoing hemodialysis. These numbers highlight the significant challenges facing the nephrology sector. In response, the Tunisian Society of Nephrology, Dialysis, and Renal Transplantation is organizing a nationwide free blood pressure screening day, titled "Know Your Pressure... Protect Your Kidneys." This event will take place on Sunday, May 17, in the Ariana governorate, at a major shopping center.

In this context, the Tunisian Society of Nephrology, Dialysis, and Renal Transplantation, which aims to counter the exorbitant healthcare and social costs of this pathology, reiterates that early detection is the fundamental mechanism to prevent the progression to chronic kidney disease. From a medical and economic perspective, the society emphasizes that renal transplantation is the optimal solution and the most effective alternative to dialysis machines. This requires an immediate strengthening of organ donation culture, coupled with the development of national legislative and logistical frameworks.

A Proximity Initiative

The event on May 17 coincides with World Hypertension Day. According to the association's statement, the goal is to raise public awareness about the direct and close link between blood pressure disorders and the preservation of kidney functions. To achieve this, healthcare professionals will offer free medical examinations and instant blood pressure measurements to the general public. This initiative will be reinforced by similar awareness campaigns conducted simultaneously in different regions of the Republic.

Experts remind us that high blood pressure is the second main cause of kidney failure in Tunisia. Dubbed the "silent killer," this condition is particularly feared: it often causes no apparent clinical symptoms until it reaches advanced stages, where the blood vessels in the kidneys are severely damaged.

Note: In addition to screening activities, the association has planned educational workshops that will highlight essential preventive behaviors to adopt in daily life, including reducing salt consumption, regular physical activity, and avoiding the anarchic consumption of medications and analgesics, which are highly susceptible to causing acute kidney toxicity.
