Sleep Deprivation Linked to Serious Long‑Term Health Risks, Says Sleep Medicine Expert
Dr. Mohamed Turki, a specialist in sleep medicine, warned that repeated lack of sleep can, over time, trigger several severe illnesses such as weakened immunity, obesity and even cancer.
In an interview with the Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) agency, Dr. Turki emphasized that staying up late and not getting enough sleep for three months or more can lead to serious organ disorders, especially affecting the heart. He added that sleep loss has a negative impact on mood, reduces physical energy, and impairs both cognitive and professional performance. Moreover, it increases the risk of road accidents by sixfold.

The specialist also clarified that a reduction in sleep duration among older adults is a normal physiological phenomenon. According to him, this does not constitute a health problem that requires medical intervention—unless the sleep is fragmented or fails to provide the restorative rest the body needs.
