A Journalist's Book: Fatma Karray's Interview with Foued Mebazaâ
This book is a journalist's book, written by one of our best political writers, Fatma Karray. It recounts a series of interviews conducted by our colleague for the daily newspaper Chourouq from January to August 2023.
When Fatma Karray asked Foued Mebazaâ, who was then the President of the Chamber of Deputies, for an interview in 2009, he promised to do so once he left politics. We know the rest of the story: the revolution, and Foued Mebazaâ's appointment as interim President of the Republic. The project was delayed but not forgotten. We know Fatma Karray's tenacity when a project is close to her heart, and this one was no exception.
At the end of his term, Foued Mebazaâ kept his promise and graciously accepted to answer all of Fatma Karray's questions over the course of a year. Fatma Karray chose to focus her research on the period between the two revolutions: January 1952 and January 2011, a crucial period in contemporary Tunisian history. She found the perfect witness in Foued Mebazaâ.
Foued Mebazaâ lived at the heart of power for over 70 years. This book, which recounts his life and career, can be considered his memoirs, as he approved its content shortly before his passing. The book is also a testament to contemporary Tunisian national history through Foued Mebazaâ's unwavering personal commitment to serving his country, writes editor Mohamed Salah Bettaïeb, who accompanied the development of this work. Although Foued Mebazaâ is no longer with us, his memory remains.
