Ras Angela: A Hidden Gem in North Africa

Ras Angela, also known as Cap Angel, offers visitors a unique natural spectacle where the intense blue of the Mediterranean Sea blends with the lush green mountains of the region. Located 15 km from the city of Bizerte and 22 km from Lake Ichkeul, this region, recognized since December 2014 as the northernmost point of North Africa, attracts lovers of ecological tourism, fishing, and nature, seduced by its picturesque landscapes and peaceful atmosphere.

A Unique Combination of Landscapes

The site stands out for its exceptional combination of beaches, cliffs, and forest areas, offering an ideal setting for observing local biodiversity and enjoying spectacular sunsets. According to Idris Cherif, president of the Association for the Protection and Maintenance of the Bizerte Coastline, Ras Angela has considerable tourist potential, comparable to that of Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa, but still struggles to attract a steady flow of visitors due to a lack of infrastructure and promotion.

Challenges and Limitations

Despite the efforts of the Ministry of Tourism and civil society, the number of foreign visitors remains limited, with only about fifty tourists per month over the past two years. The site also suffers from problems related to the state of access roads and pollution of certain beaches, with the presence of plastic waste and bottles, hindering the tourist development of the region.

Promising Perspectives

However, the prospects are promising. Sofiane Ben Salehin, regional delegate for tourism in Bizerte, indicates that the region should benefit from an increasing tourist influx after the completion of the bridge connecting the delegations of Ghezouna and Bizerte South, scheduled for the end of 2027. Sports events, such as off-road rallies and multi-kilometer races, are already being organized to promote the destination to a national and international audience. The development of rural and family accommodations in the region is also underway, with over 100 structures planned or under construction, facilitating the reception of visitors and encouraging tourist investment.

A Strategic Vision for the Future

Local authorities emphasize the need for a strategic vision and genuine political will to fully exploit the potential of Ras Angela, making it a flagship destination in the north of the Mediterranean, similar to other world-renowned tourist sites. Ras Angela, with its unique geographical position and natural riches, remains a symbol of Tunisian heritage and a promise of sustainable and responsible tourism for the years to come.
