Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities Responds to Water Infiltration Videos at Grand Egyptian Museum
The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has responded to videos circulating on social media showing water infiltration in the Grand Egyptian Museum's hall, as well as images of damage to certain floor surfaces, which occurred less than six weeks after the museum's official opening.
Ministry's Statement
In a statement, the ministry clarified that the observations regarding certain areas of the outdoor floors are minor and result from temporary installations set up for the inauguration ceremony. The ministry added that restoration work is underway, in accordance with the agreement with the company responsible for organizing the event, and according to a precise and progressive schedule.
Restoration Work
The ministry assured that the repair operations are being carried out in strict compliance with technical standards, without affecting visitor traffic or the quality of the museum experience, and aim to restore all elements to their original state.
Water Infiltration Controversy
Regarding the controversy surrounding water infiltration in the hall, the ministry explained that the museum's architectural design features geometric openings in the ceiling, intended to provide sustainable natural light and adequate ventilation. The ministry emphasized that the flow of limited amounts of water during rainfall is consistent with the architectural concept and is a predictable phenomenon at this time of year.
Normal Operation
The ministry also stated that the Grand Egyptian Museum continues to welcome the public normally, in accordance with the official schedules in effect since its opening on November 4, without any changes. Visitation is taking place in a smooth and organized manner.
Visitor Attendance
Finally, the ministry indicated that the museum has recorded a sustained influx of Egyptian and foreign visitors since its opening, with an estimated daily average of 15,000 visitors, a figure considered compatible with the museum's maximum capacity and flow management at different times of the day.
Grand Egyptian Museum
Inaugurated in early November during an international ceremony, the Grand Egyptian Museum was designed to become the world's largest museum dedicated to a single civilization, that of ancient Egypt.
