Trial of Former Prosecutor Bechir Akremi Set for December 23
The specialized criminal chamber for terrorism cases at the Court of First Instance in Tunis has scheduled the trial of former Prosecutor of the Republic Bechir Akremi for December 23. The case was brought against Akremi by the defense committee of martyr Chokri Belaïd.
Charges Against Akremi
The charges against Akremi include "falsification, use, and possession of false documents" allegedly committed during his supervision of the investigation into the assassination of martyr Chokri Belaïd.
Background of the Case
On February 22, 2024, the investigating judge at the Court of First Instance in Tunis issued a detention warrant against Akremi. This warrant was related to a case filed by the El Watad party, of which Chokri Belaïd was the Secretary-General before his assassination, and the entourage of martyr Mohamed Brahmi. The case concerns judicial actions taken by Akremi in the investigation into Belaïd's assassination when he was in charge of the case.
