Tunisian Consumer Organization Slams Exorbitant Prices of Sacrificial Lambs

Lotfi Riahi, President of the Tunisian Organization for Informing Consumers (OTIC), Criticizes Excessive Prices of Sacrificial Lambs

On Monday, May 4, 2026, Lotfi Riahi, President of the OTIC, condemned the prices of sacrificial lambs, which he deemed "excessive and devoid of any rationality." According to him, the current prices on the market range from 800 to over 1,500 dinars per unit.

During an interview on Jawhara FM, Lotfi Riahi attributed the surge in prices to a lack of visibility on the state of the livestock. He pointed out the absence of precise data on the number of heads available, as well as the distribution between males and females, and the lack of data on the exact number of animals destined for sacrifice.

Furthermore, he reminded that farmers are facing a major crisis due to the doubling of the costs of animal feed. He added that farmers are facing significant challenges due to the doubling of the prices of hay.

The President of the OTIC also denounced the influence of intermediaries on sales points (Rahba). According to him, these intermediaries "impose prices completely disconnected from the real cost structure, prioritizing excessive and speculative profit margins, to the detriment of citizens."

Mr. Riahi also stated that "the Ministry of Commerce has developed a strategy to contain this inflation and regulate the market." He concluded by emphasizing that the in-depth reform of the red meat sector is today a "determinant lever" to preserve the purchasing power of Tunisians.
