Biodiversity Becomes a Top Priority for Ecosystem and Environmental Balance

Biodiversity is no longer just an ecological aspect, but a crucial factor in the balance of ecosystems and the environment. It extends to other economic and social aspects, including agriculture, forestry, alternative tourism, and local development.

In our country, biodiversity is a key element of our strategy to accelerate national action in favor of nature and ecosystems by 2030. This is achieved through the collaboration of public institutions, civil society, academic and scientific structures, as well as technical and financial mechanisms.

Biodiversity is a determining issue in this context, as confirmed by the Minister of the Environment at a national conference held to celebrate World Biodiversity Day. The need to act locally and regionally to achieve a sustainable national and global impact has been highlighted.

The importance of biodiversity is further emphasized by the fact that Tunisia has a rich biological heritage, including a wide variety of birds, 41 protected areas, 41 wetlands of international standing, and 46 bird protection zones.

It is essential to develop a comprehensive roadmap for the 2025-2030 period, with a program aligned with the International Convention on Biodiversity, to accelerate achievements in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture within the framework of the "Green Belt" project.

It is also crucial to consider the potential threats to biodiversity in Tunisia, including climate change, drought, and sea level rise. This requires adopting the most relevant approaches in the agricultural sector, water resource protection, and coastal management, as well as revising legislative texts related to the occupation of public maritime domain.

We can only welcome the numerous advances made, including the development of a national red list of threatened species and the evaluation of ecosystems within the framework of the red list of ecosystems.
