Integrated Hydraulic Transport Project of Phosphate
Last Tuesday, a meeting of the steering committee for the feasibility study of the integrated hydraulic transport project of commercial phosphate from the mining basin to the factories of the Tunisian Chemical Group in Gabès and Skhira was held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy.
According to the ministry's publication on its official Facebook page, a presentation was given on the legal aspects and progress of the technical and economic feasibility study of the project. The next steps to ensure rapid implementation were also discussed, in coordination with the various partners and stakeholders.
The Minister of Industry, Fatma Thabet Chiboub, who chaired the meeting, emphasized the importance of the project, which is in perfect alignment with the ministry's future orientations and programs, particularly the national plan to promote the phosphate sector for the period (2025-2030).
This project will contribute to:
- Strengthening the phosphate transport system
- Preserving the environment and groundwater in the Gafsa governorate
- Promoting the use of renewable energies to operate the related facilities
The Minister stressed the need to respect deadlines, noting that the ministry is committed to providing the necessary support for its implementation within the allotted timeframe, in order to strengthen the competitiveness of the phosphate sector on global markets.
It is worth noting that the commercial phosphate hydraulic transport project is part of the measures approved during the National Security Council meeting on April 26, 2023.
The project includes:
- A pipeline and hydraulic transport facilities for phosphate from the Om El Khesheb collection area in Metlaoui to the Tunisian Chemical Group factories in Gabès and Skhira
- A seawater desalination station with a production capacity of approximately 100,000 cubic meters per day
- A photovoltaic power plant to provide the necessary energy for the operation of the hydraulic transport lines, which will meet the needs of the Gafsa Phosphate Company and the Tunisian Chemical Group.
