Closure of Gafsa Household Waste Dump

The Gafsa household waste dump was permanently closed on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, due to the significant environmental pollution risks it posed to adjacent neighborhoods. The decision was made following a meeting held at the Gafsa governorate headquarters.

Background

This dump, which has been in operation since 1978, spans an area of 30 hectares and is located near several residential and university quarters, exacerbating the environmental and health impact on the local population.

New Waste Management Initiative

As part of waste management efforts, the regional authorities of Gafsa plan to establish a household waste treatment and valorization unit. This initiative was discussed during a meeting at the Ministry of Environment in Tunis on November 24, 2025, aiming to monitor the project's progress.

Project Details

The new unit is expected to process 140,000 tons of waste per year; however, the project has been suspended since 2022. The closure of the old dump and the establishment of the new unit aim to mitigate environmental pollution and improve waste management in the region.
