New Travel Requirements for Schengen Area: ETIAS
As of late 2026, travelers from 59 countries currently exempt from visa requirements for the Schengen Area will need to obtain an electronic travel authorization, known as ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System), before traveling to Europe. This new measure marks the end of "passport-only" entry for these nationals and is part of the European Union's policy to strengthen border security.
What is ETIAS?
The ETIAS, similar to the US ESTA system, will allow European authorities to check travelers before their arrival, detect potential risks, and streamline entry controls. Although this system does not replace a visa, it will be mandatory for all short stays, tourist or professional, with a maximum duration of 90 days over 180.
Application Process
The application process will be done online and is designed to be quick: it only takes a few minutes to fill out the form. Once validated, the authorization will be valid for up to three years or until the passport expires. The application cost is estimated to be around 20 euros.
Affected Countries
The countries concerned include the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, and several Latin American nations. On the other hand, citizens of countries that already require a Schengen visa, such as Tunisia, are not affected and will continue to follow the usual visa application procedure.
Implementation and Benefits
According to European authorities, the effective implementation of ETIAS is scheduled for late 2026. Until then, citizens of affected countries can continue to travel with just their passport. Airlines will also be required to check that passengers have a valid authorization before boarding. For travelers, this new procedure requires additional preparation time, but promises to simplify border controls and reduce waiting times upon arrival. European authorities estimate that ETIAS will contribute to improved security and harmonized border control standards with those applied internationally.
