Regulation of Mosque Staff: A New Proposal

The commission for organizational administration, digitization, governance, and anti-corruption will discuss a proposed law presented by MP Syrine Mourabet during the upcoming parliamentary year, starting early October. The goal is to establish a fundamental law to regulate the work of mosque staff.

Key Objectives

This proposal, consisting of 12 chapters, defines the roles and responsibilities of individuals involved:

  • Imam-preacher
  • Imam for the five daily prayers
  • Muezzin
  • Caretaker
  • Chief caretaker
  • Any other person exercising a function within a mosque under the supervision of the Ministry of Religious Affairs

Current System Limitations

The authors of the proposal believe that the current system lacks a unified legal framework, failing to guarantee mosque employees their fundamental rights, such as:

  • A fixed monthly salary
  • Social coverage
  • Right to vacations
  • Incentive bonuses

Proposed Recruitment Conditions

The proposed law also suggests recruitment conditions, including:

  • Level of education
  • Specialized training
  • Political and partisan neutrality

This proposal aims to address the limitations of the current system and provide a more comprehensive and regulated framework for mosque staff, ensuring their rights and promoting a more organized and efficient management of mosques.
