National Organ Transplantation Update

The Director General of the National Center for the Promotion and Transplantation of Organs (Cnpto), Professor of Cardiac Surgery Jalel Ziadi, revealed that over 1,700 people are currently on the waiting list for an organ transplant in Tunisia.

Waiting List Breakdown

According to data presented during a press conference held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, on the occasion of World and National Organ Donation Awareness Day, the list includes:

  • Approximately 1,600 patients waiting for a kidney transplant
  • 50 patients waiting for a liver transplant
  • 50 patients waiting for a heart transplant

Concerning Yet Improving Situation

Professor Ziadi described these figures as "concerning," while also acknowledging the significant improvement in the rate of organ donation and transplantation observed in recent years.

Increased Citizen Engagement

"The growing commitment of citizens to organ donation has enabled us to perform 20 kidney transplants, 6 heart transplants, and 5 liver transplants this year," he specified.

Ongoing Efforts

The Cnpto continues to work towards increasing awareness and promoting organ donation in Tunisia, with the goal of reducing the waiting list and improving the lives of those in need of a transplant.
