Motorcycle Regulations in Tunisia
Colonel Hichem Chaabani, head of the regional section of the Road Safety Observatory for the Center-West, confirmed today, Tuesday, December 9, 2025, that out of the two million motorcycles in Tunisia, only 20,000 are registered with the land transport agencies.
Key Findings
- Chaabani stated that using a motorcycle for transporting people is against the law and is legally classified as "transporting people in a vehicle not intended for this purpose".
- He emphasized that most motorcycle drivers do not have a driver's license, stressing the need for drivers to have a category AA license, as well as the obligation to wear a helmet.
- Chaabani specified that the law related to the Highway Code applies to motorcycles.
Non-Compliance with Regulations
- He also noted that motorcycle users in Tunisia consider themselves pedestrians and violate the law by driving on sidewalks and against traffic, despite using vehicles that do not meet specifications and are not registered with the Land Transport Agency's records.
- This lack of compliance with regulations poses a significant risk to road safety in Tunisia, highlighting the need for increased awareness and enforcement of traffic laws.
