World Osteoporosis Day: Raising Awareness on October 20th
A osteoporosis awareness day will be organized on October 4, 2025, by the rheumatology department of Mongi Slim Hospital in La Marsa, in collaboration with the International Osteoporosis Foundation, to coincide with World Osteoporosis Day, which is observed on October 20th every year.
Osteoporosis: A Silent Disease
The head of the rheumatology department at Mongi Slim Hospital, Ahmed Laatar, stated in a declaration to the TAP that osteoporosis is a silent disease that affects approximately 25% of women over 45 years old in Tunisia, particularly during the menopause period, noting that 1 in 7 men are also affected by this disease.
Causes and Consequences of Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is linked to the decrease in estrogen levels, especially during the menopause period, leading to a loss of bone density and the fragilization of bones, he explained. The disease can be diagnosed when a fracture occurs in the wrist, hip, or vertebrae due to bone fragility, highlighting the importance of early detection through bone densitometry.
Importance of Awareness and Prevention
The specialist emphasized the importance of this awareness day, which aims to better understand the disease, its complications, and means of prevention. By raising awareness about osteoporosis, individuals can take proactive steps to prevent the disease and reduce the risk of fractures, improving overall bone health and quality of life.
