Successful Organ Transplantation in Mahdia: Three Organs Transplanted from Brain-Dead Donor

Ministry of Health Announces Successful Transplantation of Three Organs

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health announced the successful transplantation of three organs from a brain-dead donor in Mahdia. The operation was carried out in record time, thanks to a coordinated effort between the Ministries of Health and Interior, and the use of a helicopter to transport the medical team.

Successful Transplantation of Heart and Two Kidneys

One heart was transplanted at the La Rabta Hospital, while two kidneys were allocated to two patients on the national waiting list. The successful operation is a testament to the ability of public hospitals to provide high-specialized care and save lives, provided that all conditions for coordination and mobilization are met.

Chronic Shortage of Donors and Increasing Needs

This transplantation comes at a time of growing needs and chronic shortage of donors. According to statistics from the National Center for the Promotion of Organ Transplantation (CNPTO), there are over 1,800 patients on waiting lists, including nearly 1,600 for a kidney transplant, 50 for a heart transplant, and the same number for a liver transplant. Additionally, over 14,000 Tunisians are currently undergoing renal dialysis, with approximately 30% requiring an urgent transplant.

Limited Number of Transplantations from Brain-Dead Donors

Despite the high demand, the number of transplantations from brain-dead donors remains limited. According to the same data, only 30 transplants (kidneys, liver, and heart combined) had been carried out from 10 donors up to October 5, 2025.
