Reception of a New Maritime Tugboat at the Port of Bizerte-Menzel Bourguiba
The Office of Merchant Marine and Ports (OMMP) received, on Sunday, at the port of Bizerte-Menzel Bourguiba, a fifth maritime tugboat, named "Maktaris". This new addition is considered a major asset for the port, allowing for improved performance and guaranteeing the safety and security of ships and their cargo, according to a statement published by the OMMP.
Background
For reference, the fourth maritime tugboat, "Dougga", arrived at the port of Gabès on January 16, 2026, as part of a program aimed at modernizing port and maritime services.
The first tugboat, "Bellarija", was delivered to the OMMP on September 27, 2025, at the port of La Goulette, as part of a total of six maritime tugboats. The acquisition of these tugboats will require a total budget of around 168 million dinars (MD). The goal is to renew the fleet of maritime tugboats, strengthen navigation safety in port areas, and ensure the security of facilities, while improving emergency response capabilities, particularly for towing, assistance, search, and rescue operations.
Objectives of the Investment
This investment aims to support the energy and ecological transition, in response to new logistical requirements for international maritime transport. It also seeks to reduce port operating costs and contribute to the national coastal protection system in Tunisia.
OMMP's Role
It is worth noting that the OMMP manages eight Tunisian ports, including:
- Radès
- La Goulette
- Bizerte-Menzel Bourguiba
- Sousse
