The Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fishing (UTAP) issued a call on Tuesday for all stakeholders, including producers, processors, and exporters, to work together to ensure the success of the 2025 olive harvest. This appeal was made during an expanded meeting of its executive board, held on Saturday in Kairouan.
Key Recommendations
In a statement released after the meeting, UTAP urged the National Oil Office to fully assume its regulatory role in this strategic sector and invited banks to provide necessary financing to support the various actors in the industry. The agricultural organization also suggested:
- Redirecting a portion of subsidies granted to imported vegetable oils towards supporting the consumption of olive oil
- Exploring new export markets
Preparations for the Date Harvest
On another note, UTAP emphasized the importance of quickly initiating preparations for the date harvest and setting a favorable reference price for producers as soon as possible.
Grain Crops and Fishing
Regarding grain crops, the organization highlighted the need to:
- Promote the use of available selected seeds
- Ensure farmers' access to necessary fertilizers UTAP also commended the authorities' efforts to combat illegal fishing and called for a revision of the vessel monitoring system for fishing boats.
