The Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fishing (UTAP) issued a call on Tuesday for all stakeholders, including producers, processors, and exporters, to work together to ensure the success of the 2025 olive season. This appeal was made during an extended meeting of its executive board, held on Saturday in Kairouan.
Key Recommendations
In a statement released after the meeting, UTAP urged the National Oil Office to fully assume its regulatory role in this strategic sector and invited banks to provide necessary financing to support the various actors in the industry. The agricultural organization also suggested:
- Redirecting a portion of subsidies granted to imported vegetable oils towards supporting the consumption of olive oil
- Exploring new export markets
Preparations for Date Season and Grain Crops
UTAP emphasized the importance of:
- Quickly initiating preparations for the date season
- Setting a favorable reference price for producers as soon as possible
- Valuing available selected seeds and ensuring farmers' access to necessary fertilizers for grain crops
Combating Illegal Fishing
While acknowledging the authorities' efforts in combating illegal fishing, UTAP called for a revision of the vessel surveillance terminal system.
By working together, UTAP aims to address the challenges facing the agricultural and fishing sectors, ultimately ensuring a successful 2025 olive season and promoting the growth of Tunisia's agricultural industry.
