Exceptional Water Inflow in Northern Tunisia

The northern region of Tunisia has recorded an exceptional water inflow, with 51 million m³ of rainwater accumulated in dams during the first eight days of December, according to Faiez Msallem, Director General of Dams and Major Hydraulic Works at the Ministry of Agriculture. He considers this to be "very important and reassuring" indicators for the current season.

Msallem stated, in a statement given to the TAP Agency on Monday, that the northern dams have totaled 200 million m³ since the beginning of autumn. This inflow has significantly strengthened their reserves and ensured the supply of drinking water. If the rainfall continues at the same pace, irrigation should also be secured, he estimated.

Since the beginning of September, the dams in the Béja governorate have recorded significant volumes, notably improving their stocks compared to the same period last year. The Sidi El Barrak dam has increased from 74 to 148 million m³, the Sidi Salem dam from 92 to 122 million m³, while the Kassab dam has progressed from 19 to 24.6 million m³.

The Béja governorate is home to the largest dam in Tunisia, Sidi Salem, with a capacity of 643 million m³, which has been supplying several regions with drinking and agricultural water since its commissioning in 1982 on the Medjerda wadi. The Nefza delegation also includes one of the country's main dams, Sidi El Barrak, as well as the Kassab dam, located north of Béja.
