Launch of North-Center Water Transfer Project
The first phase of the North-Center water transfer project, estimated to cost 2.5 billion dinars, is set to begin at the end of 2026, following the completion of technical studies, announced development expert Ibrahim Omri.
Project Overview
The project spans a 400 km route, crossing eight governorates, and is structured into four lots. The fourth lot concerns the Kairouan governorate, between the Nebhana and Sidi Saad dams, covering a distance of 84 km. This will impact the delegations of Sbikha, Aïn Jeloula, Chebika, Hafouz, and Mnzel Mhiri.
Project Funding
On November 24, 2025, Omri stated on Diwan Fm that the total project cost amounts to 2.5 billion dinars, comprising:
- 300 million dinars in donations
- 500 million dinars financed by national resources
- The remaining amount will be covered by loans from the German Development Bank and the European Bank
Expected Outcomes
According to Omri, this project is expected to strengthen the agricultural sector in the region, which has been affected by drought and decreased well productivity in recent years. He assured that the water supply to the northern governorates will not be impacted, as the transfer will only concern the surplus water intended to be valorized in the central regions.
