University of Tunis El Manar Ranks First Nationally and Second in the Maghreb
The University of Tunis El Manar has risen to the top spot nationally and second in the Maghreb, behind Morocco's Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, according to the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. This year, nine Tunisian institutions are featured in the rankings.
The University of Tunis El Manar is positioned in the 801-1000 bracket among 2,191 universities from 115 countries. It is followed by the universities of Jendouba, Manouba, and Sfax, ranked between 1201 and 1500, while Gabès, Carthage, Monastir, Sousse, and Tunis are ranked beyond 1500.
On a global scale, the University of Oxford retains its first-place position for the tenth consecutive year, driven by its research performance. Princeton reaches the third position, tied with another university, marking its best historical ranking and becoming the only American university to progress this year.
China strengthens its presence in the top 40 with five universities, up from three last year, while Hong Kong sets a record with six institutions among the top 200, thanks to a notable improvement in teaching quality. India, on the other hand, rises to the second global rank in terms of the number of ranked universities, behind the United States.
The Times Higher Education ranking, published annually, evaluates research-intensive universities based on four core missions:

These missions are assessed through 18 balanced and comparative performance indicators.
