Multisectoral Steering Committee Meets to Finalize National Road Safety Strategy
The multisectoral steering committee met yesterday, Wednesday, to finalize the National Road Safety Strategy, which aims to make roads safer for everyone.
According to a statement from the National Road Safety Observatory, the strategy is based on comprehensive interventions that affect several vital sectors, including:
- Legal and legislative aspects, with the revision and improvement of laws to ensure greater deterrence and better safety.
- Training and development, with the goal of improving the skills of all actors in the transport sector, whether it be ministries or various organizations.
- The strategy also focuses on investing in infrastructure and vehicles, allocating funds to improve the condition of roads and ensuring that vehicles (both locally manufactured and imported) meet safety standards and are safer.
Discussions during the workshops focused on five main axes:
- Infrastructure and safe speeds, working on designing roads that ensure user safety and defining speeds adapted to their nature.
- Road user behavior, raising awareness and seeking to change the dangerous behaviors of drivers and pedestrians.
- Encouraging and developing safe public transportation.
- Strengthening safety controls on all types of vehicles.
- The post-accident phase, working to improve the speed and efficiency of accident response to save lives.
The statement emphasizes that the National Road Safety Strategy, which took into account all stakeholders, has a clear and ambitious goal: to reduce the number of road deaths by 50% by 2034.
