Tunisia’s Ministry of Family Launches a National “Preparation for Married Life” Plan

Malika El Bejaoui, Director of Family Affairs at the Ministry of Family, Women, Children and the Elderly, unveiled the National Plan “Preparation for Married Life and Family”. The initiative is part of the first pillar of the National Family Cohesion Plan 2035.

What the programme aims to achieve

  • Equip future spouses with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to strengthen relationship stability and build a cohesive family unit.
  • Deepen understanding of the role and significance of marriage and family, as well as the core values that sustain them.
  • Teach essential life‑skills, ranging from communication techniques to conflict‑resolution strategies.

Key focus areas

Pillar Description
Role awareness Clarify the social and personal functions of marriage and family life.
Values transmission Reinforce fundamental values (respect, solidarity, mutual support).
Couple & household management Train couples to manage household finances, allocate resources wisely, and share parenting responsibilities.
Health promotion Foster a culture of physical and psychological well‑being for both partners and children.

“On the ground, we must develop financial‑management competencies and teach shared responsibility in child‑rearing and resource use. This guarantees family cohesion and high‑quality relationships within the home,” emphasized El Bejaoui.

Why it matters

  • Financial literacy for couples reduces the risk of economic stress‑related conflicts.
  • Shared parenting encourages balanced gender roles and improves children’s outcomes.
  • A holistic health approach (physical + mental) supports long‑term marital satisfaction.
