Director General of Public Security Reveals Alarming Drug-Related Statistics

The Director General of Public Security at the National Guard Directorate has disclosed that 34 individuals are involved daily in drug-related cases. He specified that security units, across all specialties, handle approximately 20 drug cases per day, based on statistics from the past decade, spanning from 2015 to 2024.

Speaking at a awareness day about the dangers of drugs and psychotropic substances in schools, held at a hotel in Sousse, Director General Nizar Badis emphasized that the figures revealed by international and national reports on drug consumption are a cause for deep concern.

He explained that drug use is increasing at a faster rate than the global population growth, noting that the number of consumers has reached approximately 316 million worldwide as of 2023, according to the 2025 World Drug Report.

He added that drug consumption is the cause of around half a million deaths per year, according to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), indicating that this figure represents only a small part of the damage caused by this scourge. These damages are not limited to physical and psychological harm but extend to school dropout, social isolation, violence, and can even lead to judicial and social delinquency.

He continued: "No one has the right to accept slogans such as 'it doesn't happen in schools' or 'none of our students are involved in this scourge'," affirming that these figures constitute a clear warning that calls on everyone to protect our children from the danger of drugs.
