Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) are the Most Prevalent Occupational Diseases Among Workers in Tunisia

The proportion of MSDs has reached 79.7% of the total number of cases reported to the National Health Insurance Fund (CNAM) in 2021, according to a study published in the bulletin of the Institute of Health and Safety at Work (ISST) for October 2025.

Key Findings of the Study

The study revealed that the sector contributing the most to the spread of occupational diseases in Tunisia is the textile and clothing industry, particularly in the specialty of sewing. It highlights that this sector is the primary cause of musculoskeletal disorders affecting the upper limbs and joints, due to the intensity of repetitive work performed in the same manner throughout the employees' actual activity.

Methodology of the Study

This study, titled "Prevalence of symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders and associated factors among seamstresses in the Cap Bon region," was based on a sample of over 200 textile workers in a garment factory and spanned three months, from November 2022 to January 2023.

Understanding Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs)

MSDs are a set of diseases that affect both bones and muscles, including several problems such as muscle weakness, difficulty moving, stiffness, and pain.

Efforts to Address MSDs

Samia Fehri, in charge of managing the Institute of Health and Safety at Work (ISST), stated to the Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) agency that this occupational disease is mainly prevalent in the industrial sector due to the continuous repetition of movements. She added that the Institute is working to develop a specific work program for reforms in workplaces, allowing for the maintenance, in a participatory manner, of productivity as well as the health and safety of workers.
