Tunisian Mufti Urges Citizens to Prioritize Financial Realities Ahead of Eid al-Adha
As the Eid al-Adha celebrations approach, the Mufti of the Republic, Hichem Ben Mahmoud, has issued a message of serenity to all Tunisian citizens. Concerned about alleviating the weight of social distress on families struggling financially, he reminded the public of the core principles of Sharia law, which are founded on compassion, mercy, and ease.
Financial Capability is a Condition
The Mufti emphasized that the significance of the Eid sacrifice, although spiritually crucial, is inherently tied to one's financial capacity and ability. He stressed that individuals who are unable to acquire a sacrificial animal due to limited means are not guilty of any wrongdoing and should not feel guilty.
Religious Duty Must Be Accomplished Within Means
The Mufti cited the Tunisian proverb "Étends tes pieds à la mesure de ton manteau" (Stretch your feet to the length of your cloak), highlighting the importance of moderation and avoiding excessive burdens. He clarified that individuals are not obligated to take on debt or exhaust their budgets beyond their means for the sake of the sacrifice, especially in light of the current economic challenges.
Acting Within One's Means
The Mufti's message serves as a reminder that the spirit of Eid al-Adha is not about imposing unnecessary financial burdens on oneself or others. Rather, it is about being mindful of one's capabilities and acting accordingly. By prioritizing financial realities, individuals can ensure that they are able to fulfill their religious duties while maintaining a sense of balance and responsibility.
