Tragic Landslide in Darfur Claims Over 1,000 Lives
More than a thousand people lost their lives in a massive landslide that completely destroyed a village in Sudan’s Darfur region, according to the Sudan Liberation Army, which controls the area.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the movement detailed that massive landslides completely razed the village of Tersin, located east of Mount Marra near the Suni region. The disaster resulted in the death of the entire population, estimated at over a thousand men, women, and children, leaving only one survivor, according to early reports.
The communiqué notes that the catastrophe occurred on Sunday, “due to the heavy rains that fell during the last week of August.” The movement emphasized that the village was “entirely flattened,” and called on the United Nations, as well as regional and international organizations, to assist in extracting the victims’ bodies from the rubble.
