Ministry of Equipment and Housing Announces Over 2000 Buildings at Risk in Tunisia
The Ministry of Equipment and Housing announced that more than 2000 buildings are currently deemed to be at risk in several regions of Tunisia, as stated by Moncef Soudani, Director of Housing Improvement, on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. During his intervention on National Radio, he specified the distribution of these buildings: over 1000 in Tunis, 550 in Monastir, 300 in Bizerte, 300 in Nabeul, 175 in Jendouba, and 100 in Kairouan. Safety inspections and tests for these buildings have already begun in order to plan the necessary interventions. According to Moncef Soudani, repairs will start very soon. In the governorate of Tunis, over 500 inspections have been carried out, revealing that the majority of buildings pose an imminent and confirmed risk. Some old constructions, belonging to foreign owners, have reached the end of their lifespan and require demolition, he specified. Tunisian law stipulates that the owner must carry out the necessary repairs. In case of impossibility, the municipality intervenes at the owner's expense. The ministry has also submitted three regulatory texts related to buildings at risk of collapse to the presidency of the government for approval, with the hope that they will be validated in 2026. These texts concern two agreements, the first between owners and municipalities, the second between the ministry and owners, and the creation of a commission responsible for monitoring the situation of occupants and ensuring their relocation if necessary.
