Doubling and Electrification Project of Railway Line No. 22: Specific Work Plan to be Ready Within a Week
The specific work plan and annexes for the doubling and electrification project of railway line No. 22, connecting Sousse, Monastir, and Mahdia on the Moknine-Mahdia section (21 km), will be ready within a week, according to the regional director of the Office of Topography and Cadastre in Monastir.
Progress Update
The representative of the Tunisian National Railway Company (SNCFT) presented a report on the progress of commitments made during the technical commission meeting, held at the governorate headquarters to monitor the project. The commitments included the demarcation of the land portion of the project and the railway domain in the El Chraf and Baghdadi areas of Bekalta, in accordance with the recommendations of the technical commission for accelerating projects, which met at the government presidency on September 3.
Project Details
The project's estimated cost is approximately 114 million euros (around 380 million Tunisian dinars). It aims to develop and improve urban railway transport services between Sousse, Monastir, and Mahdia by:
- Increasing the capacity of line No. 22
- Reducing travel times
- Increasing the number of daily trips from 44 to 60, with departures every 20 minutes instead of every 40 minutes

Next Steps
The publication of the tender for the doubling and electrification of line No. 22, on the 21 km Moknine-Mahdia section, is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026, after overcoming several difficulties, resolving land issues, and completing the necessary studies.
