Brain Drain in Tunisia: 6,000 Engineers Leave the Country Every Year

The Dean of Tunisian Engineers, Mohsen Ghrissi, explained that 6,000 engineers leave Tunisia each year, indicating that the total number of emigrated engineers has reached around 45,000 out of a total of 110,000 registered engineers. In a statement to Mosaïque, the Dean of Engineers described this number as "frightening", adding that Tunisian engineering skills are in high demand by European countries, Canada, and some Asian countries. The speaker emphasized that the real danger lies in the emigration of engineers from the public sector and public enterprises, citing SONEDE (National Water Exploitation and Distribution Company) as an example. The Dean of Tunisian Engineers specified that low salaries are one of the main causes of this exodus. He stated that it is "unacceptable to offer salaries between 600 and 700 dinars to a young engineer, or for them to manage projects worth millions of dinars while only earning 1,500 dinars". Ghrissi called on the President of the Republic to promulgate a law to set a reference salary list for the engineering profession, stating: "Tunisia is training engineering skills and offering them as a gift to other countries for them to benefit from their expertise."
