Microsoft Announces Potential Slowdowns on Azure Platform
Microsoft announced on Saturday that users of its Azure platform may experience slowdowns due to multiple cuts to underwater fiber optic cables in the Red Sea.
Technical Update
In a technical update, the company specified that disruptions could affect traffic passing through the Middle East, resulting in increased latency for certain data streams. However, traffic that does not pass through this region is not affected.
Expected Impact
"We anticipate higher latency on some data that previously passed through the Middle East. The rest of the traffic is not impacted. We will continue to provide daily updates, or more quickly if conditions change," Microsoft stated in its announcement.
Mitigation Efforts
To limit the impact of this incident, Azure - the second-largest global cloud services provider after Amazon Web Services (AWS) - has rerouted traffic through alternative routes, which has prevented a generalized network outage.
