Wastewater Leak Damages Over 7 Kilometers of Crops in Tunisia
Environmental and Health Crisis Unfolds in Menzel Temime
A significant area of vegetable and cereal crops has been damaged over a distance of more than 7 kilometers due to a wastewater leak. The incident occurred after a failure in a treated wastewater drainage pipe belonging to the wastewater treatment plant in the Sidi Hamida and Sidi Jamal Eddine areas of Menzel Temime (Nabeul Governorate), causing an environmental and health situation described as "catastrophic" by Aymen Hammam, President of the Menzel Temime Environmental Association.
Speaking on Diwan FM radio on Tuesday, Hammam called on the relevant authorities to intervene urgently, conduct technical and sanitary inspections, assess the extent of the damage, and consider compensating affected farmers.
Several farmers expressed their outrage after their tomato fields were submerged by the wastewater, resulting in the destruction of their crops. They demanded that local and regional authorities take swift action to repair the malfunction and implement necessary measures.
The situation highlights the urgent need for improved wastewater management infrastructure and more effective emergency response mechanisms to prevent such environmental disasters from occurring in the future.
