Exhibition Showcasing Tunisian Sculpture
The TGM gallery is hosting an exceptional collective exhibition dedicated to sculpture, an art form that excels in materiality, until November 30. The exhibition, titled "Mémoire de la main" (Memory of the Hand), brings together twelve artists from different generations, schools, and sensitivities, offering a panoramic view of the evolution of sculpture in Tunisia.
A Diverse Range of Artistic Expressions
The exhibition features works in marble, bronze, resin, and unconventional materials, blending traditional know-how and contemporary experimentation. This diverse range of artistic expressions pays tribute to the pioneers of Tunisian sculpture, who, as Rim Ben Boubaker notes, "expanded the horizons of the medium, experimented with new paths, and accompanied the emergence of young generations."
Homage to Pioneers of Tunisian Sculpture
The exhibition highlights the work of Hedi Selmi (1934-1995), a prominent figure in Tunisian sculpture, with 12 of his sculptures on display. Selmi's artistic journey began at the Tunis School of Fine Arts, followed by four years of study at the Paris Academy of Fine Arts. His work explores a wide range of aesthetic possibilities, from figuration to stylized and abstract forms, reflecting the major evolutions of 20th-century sculpture.
Contemporary Tunisian Sculpture
Hechmi Marzouk, born in 1940, is another notable figure in contemporary Tunisian sculpture. A multifaceted artist, Marzouk has also worked as a draftsman, actor, and decorator-designer. His sculptures, often monumental and symbolic, can be found in public spaces, including the famous equestrian statue of Habib Bourguiba in Tunis.
Humanist Sculpture
Sahbi Chtioui (1953) is considered one of the leading figures in contemporary Arab sculpture. A self-taught artist and master mold-maker, Chtioui combines technical virtuosity with poetic sensitivity in his deeply humanist work. His sculptures, present in prestigious museums worldwide, testify to a constant dialogue between spirituality, movement, and matter.
Other Notable Artists
The exhibition also features works by Najet Ghrissi, Mohamed Ghassen, Seif Ben Hammad, Rum Karoui, Mohamed Bouaziz, Noutayel Belkadhi, Majed Zalila, and Omar Bey, showcasing the diversity and richness of contemporary Tunisian sculpture.
