Tunisian Consumer Organization Warns of “Unacceptable” Red‑Meat Price Gaps

Lotfi Riahi, president of the Tunisian Organization for Consumer Information and Guidance (OTIC), has denounced significant disparities in the retail price of red meat at local butchers, calling the gaps “unacceptable”.

  • The price of one kilogram of red meat can vary by 10 – 15 TND.
  • Some butchers sell it for around 42 TND/kg, while others list it between 55 and 60 TND/kg.

Riahi says this situation reflects a distortion in price‑setting and urges authorities to strengthen control mechanisms to protect consumers’ purchasing power and curb abusive practices.

Expected Measures

Riahi indicated that new actions could be taken soon following President Kais Saïed’s recent visit to:

  • Société Ellouhoum in El Ouardia, and
  • Bab El Fellah market,

where the focus was on red‑meat supply and pricing.

According to the OTIC president, price stabilization will require:

  1. Better market regulation – tighter oversight of butcher shops and wholesale channels.
  2. Intensified inspection operations – more frequent and rigorous price checks.
