Office of State Lands Intervenes to Stabilize Red Meat Market Ahead of Eid al-Adha

As Eid al-Adha approaches, the Office of State Lands (OTD) has taken steps to stabilize the red meat market. Starting Monday, May 25, 2026, its permanent sales point "Dewan Market" in Borj El Amri is offering over 700 kg of lamb meat at preferential prices, sold under strict veterinary control. This move aims to support family purchasing power.

The OTD has supplied its permanent sales point "Dewan Market" in Borj El Amri with a quantity exceeding 700 kg of lamb meat, sourced from the allocation of 70 lambs. In a statement to the TAP Agency, Mr. Mohamed Jlassi, a senior official at the OTD, said that this initiative is part of the strategy to regulate the prices of red meat during the Eid al-Adha period. He added that the OTD has set preferential prices of 50 dinars per kilogram for lamb meat and 35 dinars for "Barkous" (a type of sheep over one year old).

"This approach aims to meet the needs of consumers with high-quality products sold at affordable prices and subject to rigorous veterinary control by competent services," he said. Mr. Jlassi also highlighted that this operation demonstrates the social role of this active sales point, which has been in operation for six years.

To ensure fairness, local authorities, represented by the delegate of Borj El Amri, have ensured the smooth conduct of sales by rationing purchases to a maximum of 5 kg per person. This measure allows families who cannot afford to buy a whole sacrifice to stock up adequately.

Beyond red meat, this space plays a key role in regulating the prices of various agricultural products from the Borj El Amri agro-complex, including chicken, eggs, olive oil, and cheese.

Covering 1,700 hectares of state-owned land, this complex specializes in the production of fodder crops and the breeding of dairy cows. In light of the general increase in the prices of sacrificial animals, Mr. Jlassi emphasized the need to strengthen these state structures with financial and human resources to overcome the current shortages and maximize their contribution to national agricultural production.

Citizens present expressed great relief at this initiative, which offers prices significantly lower than those of traditional butcher shops. They expressed the hope that the products of this sales point would be reinforced throughout the year and expanded to other sectors, calling for increased support for this local agricultural complex, which has become an essential pillar in defending their purchasing power.
