Local Council of El Mdhilla Demands Action Against Toxic Gas Emissions
The local council of El Mdhilla, in the governorate of Gafsa, has addressed a correspondence to the President of the Republic, the Minister of Environment, the Minister of Energy and Mines, and the Minister of Health. In this correspondence, they request to identify the real causes of the toxic gas emissions emanating from the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT) in El Mdhilla.
Background
This complaint follows what residents describe as a "continuous environmental catastrophe" that has been exhausting the region's residents for years and severely affecting their health and the environment.
Seif Dellali, a member of the local council for the Workers' Quarter constituency, confirmed in a statement to the Express FM correspondent in the region that El Mdhilla has been living under the threat of atmospheric and water pollution for four decades. This pollution has rendered agricultural lands unfit for exploitation and investment and has led to the spread of serious diseases among the population, such as respiratory problems and even malignant tumors.
Demands for Action
Mr. Dellali specified that the local council has decided to intensify its actions by turning to the justice system to establish responsibilities and uncover the parties responsible for the leaks of these chemical emissions.
Residents are warning that the situation is no longer sustainable, especially with the almost daily recurrence of asphyxiation cases in recent times. They are calling for urgent intervention to limit emissions and apply international environmental standards, in addition to providing health care and compensation to affected individuals.
