Criminal Chamber Begins Interrogations in High‑Profile Corruption Case

The criminal chamber specialized in financial‑corruption cases, located near the Tunis First Instance Court, started, on Thursday evening, February 26 2026, the questioning of businessman Marouane Mabrouk and several former ministers in connection with the case concerning the lifting of the freeze on his assets by the European Union.

According to judicial sources, Marouane Mabrouk appeared before the court in custody, together with former General Director of El Karama Holding, Adel Gharar, and businessman Mehdi Ben Gharbia, who are also being prosecuted in this matter.

Several former ministers appeared freely, including Riadh Mouakher, Selma Elloumi, Samir Taieb, Imed Hammami, and Khemaies Jhinaoui.

In contrast, former Prime Minister Youssef Chahed and former minister Mabrouk Korchid were summoned in absentia, having fled the jurisdiction.

The case concerns the circumstances surrounding the European Union’s decision to lift the freeze on Marouane Mabrouk’s assets, and the possible irregularities or suspicions of financial corruption linked to that procedure.

The interrogations continue in order to determine the responsibilities of the various parties involved.
