Borj El Amri Agricultural Complex Supplies “Diwan Market” with Fresh Meat and Other Essentials During Ramadan
Date: February 24 2026
Since the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, the Borj El Amri Agricultural Complex in the governorate of Manouba has delivered to the direct‑sale outlet “Diwan Market” nearly 400 kg of lamb meat, two slaughtered cattle, as well as assorted quantities of poultry meat, eggs, olive oil, and cheeses, according to the complex’s director, Maher Ayari.
What Is “Diwan Market”?
Created four years ago in Borj El Amri through a joint initiative of the Office of State Lands and the Agricultural Complex, the “Diwan Market” aims to:
- Stabilize prices for local consumers.
- Provide high‑quality products at affordable rates.
- Preserve purchasing power during the fasting period.
Maher Ayari explained these goals in a statement to the Tunisian Press Agency (TAP).
Continuous Operation Helps Manage Supply
Because the market operates every day except Saturday (slaughterhouse closed) and Sunday (market closed), it can carefully manage the available stock—especially meat—and distribute it throughout the month of fasting. This year, the timing coincides with a lag in the lamb‑fattening cycle, which limits the number of lambs ready for slaughter.
Competitive Ramadan Prices
The director highlighted a strong demand for meat during Ramadan, noting the following competitive prices:
| Product | Price (TND /kg) |
|---|---|
| Lamb | 42.90 |
| “Barkous” beef | 30.00 |
| Chicken | 8.50 |
| Regular beef | 39.00 |
Additional discounts are offered on other items such as olive oil, eggs, and cheeses.
Product Variety Tied to the Complex’s Production
The range of goods sold at Diwan Market reflects the output of the Borj El Amri Agricultural Complex, whose activities include:
- Fruit orchards
- Cereal cultivation
- Livestock breeding
The complex maintains roughly 500 sheep and 130 cattle. Supplies are delivered to the market Monday through Friday; the Saturday closure corresponds to the slaughterhouse, while Sunday marks the market’s day off.
Supporting Local Solidarity
Beyond commercial sales, the outlet also contributes to local social solidarity. It provides food products and meat to the Local Social Solidarity Unit, which distributes them to needy families throughout Ramadan.
Community Feedback
Residents have praised the market for:
- Low prices on lamb, chicken, olive oil (11.60 TND per liter), eggs, and cheeses.
- Consistent quality, thanks to regular sanitary and economic controls.
However, they have requested:
- Additional lamb supplies to meet rising demand.
- Larger stock levels for other white‑meat products.
