Mandatory 30 km/h Speed Limit Zone Around Schools and Universities in Tunisia

The implementation of a 30 km/h speed limit zone around schools and universities is now mandatory in Tunisia, the Association of Road Safety Ambassadors reminded on Friday, warning that offenders will face a fine of 40 dinars.

The president of the association, Afef Ben Ghniya, emphasized in a statement to Express Fm that this measure aims to secure the road space for students and pupils on the occasion of the new school year. She insisted on the strict application of Decree No. 151 of 2000, amended in 2023, which imposes the mandatory reduction of speed in educational zones.

She explained that the "30 km/h zone" is not limited to vertical signage, but also includes the installation of pedestrian crossings, speed bumps conforming to standards, as well as protective barriers in front of establishments.

Ben Ghniya called on regional equipment departments and municipalities to strengthen road signage, both vertical and horizontal, and to implement the practical guide developed for the application of the "30 km/h zone".

"Respecting this speed limit is essential to protect students and pupils and avoid sometimes fatal accidents," she insisted, urging drivers to exercise increased vigilance near schools.
