Lung Cancer in Tunisia: 3000 New Cases Recorded Annually

Dr. Nesrine Majri, head of the oncology department at Abderrahmen Mami Hospital, confirmed in a statement to National Radio that 3000 new cases of lung cancer are recorded every year in Tunisia. Unfortunately, 60% of these cases are detected at an advanced stage, complicating the patient's chances of survival.

Smoking: The Main Cause of Lung Cancer

The specialist emphasized that smoking in all its forms is the primary cause of lung cancer and chronic diseases affecting the lungs. She highlighted that smoking shisha is equivalent to smoking an entire pack of cigarettes, not to mention the health damage caused by electronic cigarettes and passive smoking.

Early Detection Allows for More Effective Treatment

The doctor stressed that early detection enables the treatment of a higher percentage of lung cancer cases, urging smokers and individuals who have recently quit smoking, aged 50 to 75, to consult a doctor if they notice any symptoms.

Free Screening Program at Abderrahmen Mami Hospital

In this regard, she indicated that the Ministry of Health has implemented a lung cancer screening program at Abderrahmen Mami Hospital, which includes free consultations for screening and free clinics for smoking cessation.

Successful Early Detection and Treatment

The doctor confirmed that 160 screening operations have been carried out, allowing for the early detection of lung cancer in 5 individuals who were able to undergo surgical intervention and recover.
