Rising Red Meat Prices in Tunisia: A Concern for Consumers

Lotfi Riahi, president of the Tunisian Organization for Consumer Information, stated on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, that the increase in red meat prices continues, despite a decline in livestock feed prices.

Key Points

  • The cost of red meat production is approximately 26 dinars per kilogram.
  • Retail prices range from 55 to 60 dinars per kilogram, resulting in a profit of up to 34 dinars per kilogram for butchers.
  • The Tunisian Organization for Consumer Information is calling on the Ministries of Agriculture and Trade to provide the actual cost of one kilogram of meat.

Invited to the "Youm Saïd" show on National Radio, Mr. Riahi emphasized that butchers are making significant profits, with a margin of up to 34 dinars per kilogram of meat. He explained that the production cost of one kilogram of meat is around 26 dinars, while it is sold at retail prices between 55 and 60 dinars.

Riahi urged the Ministries of Agriculture and Trade to provide his organization with the real cost of one kilogram of meat. He also highlighted a significant decrease in livestock feed prices, with the price of "Gort" (hay) dropping from 13 dinars in 2023 to 6 dinars in 2025, and the price of straw decreasing from 10 dinars in 2023 to 2 dinars in 2025.

This situation raises concerns about the impact of rising meat prices on consumers and the need for transparency in the meat industry. The Tunisian Organization for Consumer Information is advocating for fair prices and calling on the relevant authorities to take action to address this issue.
