Low Number of Tunisians Register as Organ Donors
The number of Tunisians who have chosen to indicate "organ donor" on their national identity card remains below 17,000, revealed Abdelkarim Massoud, representative of the technical and scientific police, on Sunday during the fifth edition of the "Les Pas verts" marathon, held in La Marsa.
Event Background
The event was part of a national awareness campaign on organ donation and featured a health village supervised by the National Center for the Promotion of Organ Transplantation (CNPTO).
Call to Action
Speaking on national radio, Abdelkarim Massoud described the figure as "very low," emphasizing that organ donation is a humanitarian and noble gesture that can save lives and give hope to many patients. The official noted that the Ministry of Interior has been collaborating with the CNPTO for several years to promote the culture of organ donation.
Ongoing Efforts
As part of this effort, mobile campaigns have been conducted in 18 governorates to facilitate the registration process for citizens wishing to indicate "donor" on their identity card. According to the latest statistics from the CNPTO, 30 organ transplants (kidneys, liver, and heart) have been performed since the beginning of the year and up to October 5, 2025, from 10 donors in a state of brain death. These transplants have helped patients suffering from renal, hepatic, and cardiac insufficiency.
Future Directions
Health authorities are calling for increased awareness and simplified administrative procedures to encourage more Tunisians to engage in this solidarity effort, which remains largely unknown.
