Several MPs Present Final Report on Olive Oil Sector
On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, several members of parliament presented their final report on the olive oil sector. The report was submitted to the President of the Parliament, Ibrahim Bouderbala, and transmitted to the President of the Republic. The drafting of the report was finalized after a two-day meeting at the Parliament. It represents the conclusions of the "Point 74 meeting", which was held on September 13 in the presence of approximately 2,000 olive farmers, mill owners, and exporters, as confirmed by Hassan El Jarboui, MP and member of the Agriculture Committee, to Mosaique.
A Production Boom
The report indicates that the olive oil sector has experienced a production boom in recent years, reaching record levels. The production for the 2024-2025 season was estimated at 340,000 tons of oil, which has created several problems threatening the sustainability of the sector, particularly due to the sharp decline in prices and the excessive increase in production costs.
In light of forecasts for a record harvest for the current 2025-2026 season, which is expected to reach 500,000 tons, the report proposes taking several short-term measures to ensure the success of this season, as well as medium- and long-term measures to develop the sector and guarantee its sustainability.
Regarding urgent proposals, the MPs' report calls on the Ministry of Agriculture to facilitate procedures to allow mill owners to spread olive pomace on agricultural land, including public domain lands. The report also encourages all initiatives, whether private or from civil society, to carry out this activity and allow farmers and mill owners to export their olive oil production.
Key Recommendations
The report's recommendations aim to address the challenges facing the olive oil sector and ensure its long-term viability. Some of the key proposals include:
- Facilitating the export of olive oil production
- Encouraging the use of olive pomace as a natural fertilizer
- Implementing measures to support farmers and mill owners
- Developing strategies to promote the olive oil sector and increase its competitiveness
Overall, the report highlights the importance of the olive oil sector to the economy and the need for urgent action to address the challenges it faces. By implementing the proposed measures, the sector can be developed and sustained, ensuring the long-term viability of this important industry.
