Tunisia to Introduce Biometric Passport and ID System
During a special session held on Thursday evening as part of the 39th edition of the Enterprise Days in Sousse, the Minister of Communication Technologies, Sofiene Hemissi, announced that Tunisia will soon unveil the call for tenders and procedural steps for the biometric passport and biometric ID system. He specified that the project is expected to be operational by the end of 2026 or early 2027, as part of a comprehensive strategy to modernize administrative services and strengthen digital security.
Ambitious Plan for Digital Transformation
The Minister also shared a broader ambition for the Tunisian administration: to digitize 80% of administrative services by 2030. This transformation is part of a strategic plan aimed at improving the efficiency of public services, combating corruption, and streamlining procedures for citizens and businesses.
Unified Mobile Application for Administrative Services
In this context, Hemissi indicated that a unified mobile application will be deployed, allowing citizens to access numerous administrative services online from a single digital access point: ID card application, passport, vehicle sticker, tax declaration, etc., based on a unique identification number.
Gradual Digitization of Procedures
To achieve this, the government plans to gradually digitize procedures in the 24 ministries over the next two years, while ensuring targeted training of human resources to support this digital transition and ensure the effectiveness of the new services.
A Global Reform Dynamic
These announcements are part of a global reform dynamic that puts digital technology at the heart of Tunisian public action for the next decade, with the goal of a more transparent, accessible, and efficient administration.
