It has been four months since the restoration, renovation, and redevelopment of the Aghlabid Basins and their surroundings began under the supervision of the Military Engineering Corps and the National Heritage Institute (INP), thanks to funding from the Saudi Development Fund (SFD) dating back to 2017.

A Brief History
These monuments were built between 860 and 862, covering an area of 11,000 m2, combining utility and aesthetics. The two structures are connected by a conduit and served as a reservoir and a relaxation basin. They are inscribed in powerful polygonal enclosures reinforced with cylindrical buttresses to contain the water pressure. The basins are made of masonry with a thick layer of plaster to ensure waterproofing. At the center of the large basin, a square pole supports a pleasure platform and also serves to cancel out water movements caused by the wind. The city's most disadvantaged inhabitants used to draw water freely from cisterns adjacent to the large basin.
A Visit from the Head of State
During a visit to Kairouan on October 30, 2024, President Kaïs Saïed stopped by the Aghlabid Basins, deploring their advanced state of disrepair, with broken benches, disfigured walls, cracks, and accumulated debris. He also criticized the reliance on foreign experts and the slow pace of studies, which resulted in unnecessary public expenditure. "If the Aghlabids were still alive, they would have built new basins, and it is urgent to start the restoration as soon as possible, under the supervision of the Military Engineering Corps, since the necessary funds are available," President Saïed said in substance.
