Tunisia’s Minister of Religious Affairs Leads Commemoration of the Great Battle of Badr
Kairouan, 17 Ramadan (Friday evening) – Ahmed Bouhali, Minister of Religious Affairs, presided over a religious ceremony at the Okba Ibn Nafaa Mosque in Kairouan to mark the anniversary of the Great Battle of Badr. Celebrated each year on the 17th day of Ramadan, this event commemorates a decisive turning point in Islamic history.
A Lecture on the Teachings of the Day of Discernment
The programme featured a lecture titled “The Inspiration of Memory and Its Meanings” delivered by the mosque’s second Imam‑preacher, Sheikh Monther Alani. He examined the lessons drawn from the battle, also known as the Day of Discernment (Yawm al‑Furqan).
Key points from the lecture:
- Historical significance – The Battle of Badr was the first armed clash between Muslims and the polytheists of Quraysh.
- Divine assistance – God granted victory to a small group that had originally set out not to fight, but to intercept a Quraysh caravan and recover the goods seized from Muslims in Mecca.
- Divine lesson – Although the encounter was unexpected for the Muslims, it proved that a group standing on truth and sincerity, even if few in number, receives God’s support and triumph.
The Two Pillars of Victory
Sheikh Alani urged believers to draw inspiration from this anniversary, highlighting two core factors behind the success:
- Education of the individual – The Prophet ﷺ emphasized shaping upright men, prioritising faith and principles above all else.
- Unity – Teaching cohesion around a common word, because collective gathering is the source of Muslims’ strength.
He also stressed the Maqāsid (finalist) dimension of the battle, linking the values of solidarity to the contemporary needs of Muslims facing modern weakness and dispersion.
Spiritual Atmosphere and Posthumous Tribute
The ceremony, attended by regional and religious officials as well as numerous worshippers, was interspersed with Qur’anic recitations and liturgical chants (Madaih), creating a highly spiritual ambience.
In a side note to the event, the minister paid tribute to the family of Hammadi Bousrih, the longest‑serving preacher of the Kairouan governorate who passed away in 2008. This gesture aligns with the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ tradition of honouring its cadres during major religious celebrations.
