Kairouan Governorate to Launch Kidney Transplantation Operations

The regional health director in Kairouan, Mâamar Hajji, announced that the governorate is preparing to launch its first kidney transplantation operations within the Al Aghaliba surgery department. In a statement to the TAP agency, he specified that authorization to harvest organs from donors was granted nearly a year ago, paving the way for this new step in the field of transplants. Hajji recalled that an organ harvesting operation was recently performed at the Ibn El Jazzar University Hospital, on a donor in a state of brain death, with the consent of their family. This intervention was carried out under the supervision of the National Center for the Promotion of Organ Transplantation and the Fattouma Bourguiba Hospital in Monastir. The harvested organs made it possible to successfully perform two kidney transplants: the first at the Sahloul University Hospital in Sousse, for a 32-year-old patient, and the second at the Charles Nicolle Hospital in Tunis, for an 18-year-old. According to the regional director, nearly 400 patients suffering from renal failure in the Kairouan governorate are currently undergoing hemodialysis, between public hospitals and private centers, with a large number requiring a transplant to improve their quality of life. The region also performs around 100 cornea harvests and about ten femoral head harvests each year, the latter being transplanted in other university hospitals. Hajji emphasized the need to intensify awareness campaigns around organ donation, stressing that this gesture can save many lives.
