Moknine Municipality Takes Steps to Protect Historic Sbat

The municipality of Moknine has undertaken the installation of iron pillars to protect pedestrians, residents, and merchants of the gold market from any risk of collapse of the Sbat, also known as the Skifa des Juifs. This initiative is part of the decisions made during a working session held on September 10 at the headquarters of the Monastir governorate.

Historical Significance of the Sbat

According to historian and native of Moknine, Mohamed Jelassi, the Sbat, or Skifa des Juifs as it is locally known, is a symbol of the old city. It is a historic monument built by the Jewish community of Moknine in the mid-17th century (around 1650), a community that came from Mahdia during the Spanish arrival in Tunisia during the Ottoman-Spanish conflict of the mid-16th century (1535-1550). The Sbat thus represents an important part of the city's historical and cultural heritage and is part of the collective memory of its inhabitants.

Preservation Efforts

Many activists have repeatedly called for its preservation and restoration, considering it an element of national memory and heritage, just like any other historic monument. The installation of iron pillars is a step towards protecting this historic site and ensuring the safety of those who visit or live near it.
